  • At approximately 11:00am ET on Sunday 28 September, Law enforcement in Grand Blanc, Michigan responded to reports of an active shooter and arson incident at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Initial reports indicate that there are as many as 11 victims. Local law enforcement is reporting that the shooter is “down” and there is no ongoing threat to the public. The fire department is working to contain the fire. Initial reports, of this incident, indicate a complex attack involving vehicle ramming, fire and active shooter.

One way to avoid problems is to have a Safety Security Plan And Policies. Below are a few examples to review.

Comprehensive risk assessments help churches, Houses of worship, and their ministrues, schools, identify the vulnerabilities across their communities, campuses, buildings, and properties.

  • Safety and Security for churches should be an importantconsideration for Deacons, Elders, Leadership and Pastors. One suggestion is to develop a Plan and publish new recommendations for churches, on how to handle armed congregants.

The idea is to urge houses of worship to allow congregants to carry weapons only if they are part of an “organized, vetted, and well-regulated safety and security team” — not as a matter of personal protection only, to improve safety.

“We are saying that if a facility is going to allow individuals into the facility carrying firearms, that it is critical they do it in a well-structured, well-coordinated, well-thought-out way. And that everyone know the plan and requirements, to be armed.

This will help to make sure that everyone knows the rule and that a violation of the rule is grounds for their removal and being allowed to continue to attend, come to any of the functions or services at church. It will assure that anyone carrying is well trained and aware of the police on drawing, using or firing a firearm.

This is saying that if a facility is going to allow individuals into the facility carrying firearms, that it is critical they do it in a well structured, well coordinated, well thought-out way, given the implications of liability and safety for others, the church, and for themselves. And it can be a way to grow the safety security team and provide uniform training for any who are armed, so all will know the rules.

In addition to the possibility of shooting of unintended targets in a crisis, the risks of poorly managed firearms include unnecessary escalation of conflicts and accidental shootings when there is no risk to safety. Advocates for responsible gun ownership say risks can be managed with careful training and practices that a team will have.

The teams, the guidance says, should be established under the “oversight of church leadership, led by a designated team leader, and governed by detailed, written policies” governing who can join, how they are vetted and trained, and how the groups coordinate with law enforcement. Training should be ongoing, and “use-of-force protocols” should be clear to all on the team.

The goal of a program is to prevent situations where congregants reach for guns without coordination, who said the question of whether to allow firearms in houses of worship had been raised “in nearly every meeting with every group of stakeholders, from clergy to lay leadership to different institutions.” (In addition to practical concerns) carrying weapons in churches can be a challenge to some churches, and denominations.

  • According to the Child Crime Prevention and Safety Center, the majority of abduction cases are committed by family members. However, 28% of kidnappings are carried out by strangers. The FBI estimates every 40 seconds, a child goes missing or is abducted in the United States, with approximately 840,000 children reported missing each year. And some At church.

The difference between kidnapping and abduction is that kidynapping refers to taking by force, threat, or deceit, with the intent to cause harm. Abduction involves persuasion, fraud, force, and can be in context of family dispute, or divorce, church may not know of.

The most common reasons kids go missing include wandering off, being abducted by strangers or family members without a court order, running away, getting lost, and mental health issues. Nearly all children abducted by strangers are taken by men, with about two-thirds of stranger abductions are most often those involving female children.

  • On the morning of July 27th, the Charlottesville Va Police Department, a man began physically assaulting attendees shortly before a Sunday service. Could this be your church?

Although no serious injuries were reported, church members managed to restrain the suspect until police arrived around 9:45 a.m. He was taken into custody without further incident. Did church have a Trained Safety Team?

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward. (Report: Forrest Holt WVIR)

A church in Portsmouth Va had a problem with man, who appeared to possibly homeless, sit in front of a church, blocking one door. When he approached by Safety Team member, who advised he couldn’t block the door, but he could come in for the church service. He attend the church service.

He was wearing a backback, however nothing was done, or said, about the backpack. After going into the service, the visitor sat on the floor, instead of in a chair. The Team member went back over and advised that he needed to sit in a chair, and he could not sit on floor.

By this time, as service going on, an Elder came over to see what was going on. And he asked about the backpack and what was in it, which Team member said he didn’t know. Nothing was done and the service continued without any other issues. Later the Elder talked with the Team Lead, who was never called on the radio to be notified of this event.

This event brought up several other recent events of strange behavior, and the need to review Safety Plan, their Policies, Training, and need to do a Review Of Teams Training, it’s duties. Hopefully the Elders, Pastor, will take more interest in safety security now.

Can, Does, your church have a Team, amd do more they have better skills, training, to prevent this or other types of incidents that could be a problem? Don’t Wait For Problem, Be Prepared.
